Commissioner sponsors film screening for residents

CORAL GABLES – Coral Gables residents are invited to attend a free screening of the acclaimed 1973 film “The Sting” on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Coral Gables Art Cinema.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone for this month’s showing of ‘The Sting’ at the Coral Gables Art Cinema,” Commissioner Kirk R. Menendez said in an email statement. The movie, set in September 1936 and starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Robert Shaw, is about two grifters who team up to con a mob boss.

“Our monthly movie events were started as a way to bring our community together, offering an opportunity for neighbors to connect, relax and enjoy a classic film.”

The screenings come with complimentary drinks and popcorn, thanks to the Coral Gables Community Foundation.

The films are intended for adults 30 years old and older, Menendez said. Tickets are available online at  www.playgables.com. More information can be found at https://www.coralgables.com/events/saturday-cinema.

Extra, extra! Eat all about it

LITTLE HAVANA — A tasty mojito and Cuban pastries are two of the highlights of the popular Little Havana Food and Cultural Tour that takes place several times a day in once of Miami’s most culturally iconic neighborhoods.

Sponsored by Miami Culinary Tours, the tour offers participants a chance to experience Cuban culture, history and food during a 2 1/2hour, half-mile experience down Calle Ocho, the celebrated street of the Cuban exile community.

The group visits eight restaurants to sample culinary favorites, from cafecitos and mojitos to empanadas and pastelitos, at family-owned restaurants such as El Pub Restaurant, PC Bakery and Ball & Chain.  In between the food stops, participants visit cultural community landmarks. The tour even features a stop at a cigar factory where an expert “tocedor” rolls a cigar for the group.

The Little Havana tour is one of four food tours that have been offered since 2010 by Miami Culinary Tours. The three other tours take place in the Miami Design District, Wynwood and South Beach. The tours run throughout the day in groups of up to 14 guests. Costs are $69.99 for adults and $49.99 for children.

The meeting takes place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in city hall commission chambers, 901 SW 62nd Ave.

King Mango Strut Parade theme to be revealed

COCONUT GROVE — The King Mango Strut Parade is coming back for another year, and its theme and poster for the 41st installment will be unveiled at Barracuda Taphouse and Grill on Wednesday, Oct.2.

The event, which takes place 6 to 9 p.m., 3035 Fuller St. in the Grove, will feature artwork designed for the strut by Sofia del Rivero of Art Box Miami.

Originally conceived as a parody of the King Orange Bowl Jamboree Parade, the King Mango Strut has become a beloved Coconut Grove tradition that celebrates Miami’s quirks and notable events from the past year.

The parade was canceled in 2002 after 62 years as a New Year’s Eve tradition in downtown Miami, but the Orange Bowl football game continues and so does the King Mango Strut Parade, which attracts more than 10,000 spectators and participants each year. The upcoming strut begins at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at Commodore Plaza and Main Highway in the Grove.

For more information about the theme and poster unveiling at the Barracuda Taphouse and Grill, visit this website.
